Hammers

l recently fell and grazed my hand. It could have been a lot worse as where we live, there are drops of hundreds of feet beside some footpaths. As to the why? I was on my phone and not concentrating, of course!
This has been my wife’s worry for ages but I’ve pushed it aside. What does she know? I used to be a drummer, after all and double-tasking and good coordination are a prerequisite for that. So clearly those rules didn’t apply to me. How wrong could I have been?
Luckily, one of the many things I’ve learnt in my three-score-years-plus is that one should not test the Gods. This was a quiet nudge and I should take heed in my older age and listen to the gentle signs.
I’m not one to live in fear of ‘what if’, but I also know that when we get little hammers from ‘the universe’, we ignore them at our peril. Testing the Gods will make each subsequent hammer a little harder and, in my case, I’ll probably end up at the bottom of a valley if I choose to be a stubborn know-it-all.
We should all choose our battles wisely and try not to challenge the Gods. Especially when we get older. Oh, and our wives, folks: seems they do know best after all. Who’d’ve thunk?
