About Hester Berry – Artist of Movement and Mood
Originally from rural Devon, Hester Berry developed a deep connection with the landscape from a young age. She studied at Aberystwyth University, where her practice evolved from traditional life drawing into more conceptual explorations of environment and place.
She went on to complete an MA in Fine Art at Wimbledon, followed by several years teaching life drawing and painting in Brighton and London. Today, she lives and works full-time as an artist in Devon.
A Contemporary Painter with Classical Roots
“My art is rooted in traditional representation and methods and I do my best to constantly challenge my understanding of what “painting” is. I always explore new ways of painting, representing effects such as light, time, movement and climate. I use my strokes as economically as possible, distilling the image, feeling and the moment into what is necessary, so that objective representation leaves enough room for subjective interpretation.”
Hester’s paintings are instantly recognisable for their expressive brushwork, minimalist detail, and emotive atmosphere. Her works sit between realism and abstraction, allowing the viewer to feel rather than simply observe.

- Shortlisted for Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year
- Voted People’s Choice Young Artist of the Year by The Biscuit Factory Foundation
- Exhibited widely throughout the UK
